MANILA, Philippines - For advancing to the quarterfinals two in a row, Fil-American Treat Huey is now ranked No. 44 in the world, one rung higher than his previous ranking three weeks ago. With Great Britain's Dominic Inglot as his partner, the duo barged into the Round of 8 in the clay court tournament in Sarasota, Florida and Bucharest, Romania. It was the highest rank attained by Huey so far after the year ranked at No. 57. He moved up to No. 45 last month. Baguio Golf
John Marasigan and partner Clifford John Oliva combined for a 121 to beat Clyde Cabreros and Frank Eduardo by six and capture the Class A crown in the eighth Camp John Hay Invitational Golf Tour at the John Hay course in Baguio City recently. Marasigan, a 9-handicapper, and Oliva (16) shot 45 points under the best-ball format in the first day then pooled 76 points in aggregate format in the final round to clinch the crown in the 36-hole event, Camp John Hay’s premier member-guest team championship. Cabreros and Eduardo had 45 and 70 for a 115, nipping Bong Mandapat and Earle Farrel, who had a 114 from rounds of 45 and 69, in the countback for runner-up honors in the event sponsored by FMMI, Asia Pacific Golf Corp., Poblador, Bautista Reyes Law Office, Univ. of Baguio, Bishop Carlito Cenzon Foundation, Chevrolet, Camp John Hay DevCo and Camp john Hay Manor. Eric Espadero and Rex Balong-Angey strung up 45 and 81 for a 126 as they held off Ed Montenegro and Rochie Hojilla, who had a 45-79 and a 124, for the Class B crown in the tournament backed by hole-in-one sponsors Meister, GPS Tracker, Rizgolf, Kymco, Wilson and Empire.
Junior World
Jed Dy, Ian Matthew Lua, Arnie Taguines and Anya Cedo cruised to victories in their respective divisions after the completion of the Class E and Class F national qualifying tournament for the Junior World golf championships at the Riviera Sports Club executive course in Silang, Cavite. Dy, who won his first major international title at the US Kids World Championship last year, made a triumphant return to the ICTSI Jungolf Circuit after a long absence with a convincing victory in boys Class E, posting a 10-stroke victory over Miguel Olivarez-Ilas after a final-round 55 and a 54-hole 168 aggregate. Miguel, one of three siblings competing in the circuit, joined elder sister Bernice in the national delegation to the Junior World in San Diego, California this coming July with a 60-178.
Django Wins
Francisco "Django" Bustamante defied "father time" once again to beat Indian Raj Hundal, 8-4, and rule the recent 2012 West Coast Challenge held at the California Billiard Club in Mountain View, California. It was Bustamante’s second title in the US this year, thus raising his earnings to $8,200. His victory was worth $5,200. Last April 25, Bustamante downed American John Schmidt, 4-2, in the One-Pocket event finals to receive the $3,000 champions purse.
Beach Volleyball
LINGAYEN - A pair from the College of St. Benilde and two standouts from the University of Luzon in Dagupan emerged as unlikely semifinalists in the second leg of the 2012 Petron Ladies' Beach Volleyball Tournament here. CSB Lady Blazers Cindy Valencia and Rossan Fajardo took the first semis berth in Group A Monday after they swept their four-game elimination-round assignment at the sand courts of the wind-strewn provincial capitol beachfront grounds here. University of Luzon's Melanie Carrera and Cassandra Lleda bagged the second semis slot in Group B.
