Rank Builder | Roy's Reward: Century Club

NEWBURYPORT - Cam Roy became the 25th player in the Newburyport hockey program's history to notch his 100th career point Saturday.

Roy, a senior center who transferred from St. John's Prep after his freshman year, had a goal and two assists in Newburyport's 4-1 win over Masconomet at the Graf Rink.

With the victory coupled with a Triton loss on Saturday, the Clippers (6-4-2 overall, 6-3-1 CAL) sit two games behind the Vikings in the CAL standings.

"I was thinking of (our record) and trying to get us closer to the tournament," Roy said of his approach to Saturday's game "As long as we're getting better, 100 points is just another thing that's nice to have, but that's not what matters."

Roy contributed immediately after transferring for his sophomore season, netting 37 points (17 goals, 20 assists) for a Newburyport team that played for a state championship. As a junior, Roy was the CAL Player of the Year with 24 goals and 20 assists. This season, he has eight goals and 11 assists.

"He was a good addition," Newburyport coach Paul Yameen said of Roy. "We didn't have him until his second year. He came in his sophomore year, so we're a little over half-way through this senior year and he's already got 100 points. So I think that speaks volumes about the type of player he is."

"It's pretty cool," Roy said of hitting the centennial mark. "There's a lot of good guys in the 100-point club in Newburyport, and it's just an honor to be up there with them."

Roy also saw this win against Masco, who not only beat the Clippers, 3-2 in December, but sent Newburyport packing in the first round of the tournament last year, as a good momentum builder.

"It's a huge win," said Roy. "We lost to them in the second game of the year. We weren't all together as a team then. But now, it's really coming together, and we're making a good run right now."

Ever since Newburyport tied Triton (9-4-1. 8-1-1) Jan. 11, the Clippers (6-4-2) have gone undefeated.

Saturday's win was also capped by a solid outing from goalie Alex Buckley.

"Three weeks ago, I think people were writing us off. Now, we're right back in the thick of things," said Yameen. "I expected to come out with a little more fire, but we picked it up as the game went along. I thought we played solid defensively, and that's our game plan. We take care of our zone first and I think we did that."

The Clippers owned the first period, only allowing Masco an opportunity to take a shot on Buckley a full 10 minutes into play. By the end of the period, the Clippers led Masco 11-5 in shot count, but none went in.

The second period was an entirely different story, however, when the Clippers were not only able to kill a penalty on Dom Ferreira, but were able to able to score on Masco goalie Matt Cardillo as well. Connor Wile brought the puck down low, passing out to Kris Holmes, who buried.

Just under two minutes later, the Clippers would score on a power play of their own when Ben Ventura had a one-hopper over Cardillo's right skate, assisted by Roy and Holmes. Masco struck back four minutes after that with a scrum in front of Buckley that gave Alec Digiorgio a good look, assisted by Dan Crowther and Brian Hellrigel.

But the Clippers answered right back with five minutes left in the frame. Cooper Hines jumped the puck over Cardillo's right shoulder, assisted by senior Payson Cahill and Tyler Cusack.

The third period saw Roy entering the Newburyport record books on an assist to Ventura. Holmes passed the puck around to the back of the net where Roy waited. Roy found Ventura waiting in front of Cardillo, sent the puck to the freshman, and, bingo - Point 100.

Yameen is feeling ready for whatever challenges might be coming his team's way.

"I look forward to Pentucket on Thursday," said Yameen. "It's another CAL game. Pentucket can't be taken lightly. So I think we're looking forward to Thursday and three good days of practice and we'll be ready to go."
