Traffic Travis | Columbus Installs New Traffic Signals

Some of the city's winking traffic lights are more energy efficient thanks to a state grant.

Columbus Light and Water employees have been seen at intersections around town installing new traffic signals.

Travis Jones, director of Columbus' office of federal programs, said 10 intersections have the new energy-efficient light-emitting diode, or LED, lights. Installation at an 11th intersection will be completed soon.

The city received a $100,000 grant from the Mississippi Development Authority a year ago to buy the signals. Jones said the old signals will be recycled for parts. They contained incandescent lights.

Workers have not encountered any problems, he said. "They moved along quite well, quite well."

A list of the intersections where new signals were installed was not available at press time.
