Traffic Travis | BREAKING NEWS: Aiken Public Safety Officer Dead After Shooting Last Night

As family and friends finalize arrangements for Master PSO Officer Scotty Richardson's funeral, SLED has issued an arrest warrant for his murder.

19-year-old Stephon Carter is expected to be charged once he's released from Georgia Health Science Medical Center. Carter is accused of shooting and killing Richardson and injuring Public Safety Officer Travis Griffin.

It happened during a traffic stop on Brandt Court Tuesday night. Carter was also shot during the incident, but his injuries are not life threatening.

We've learned the teen was arrested this summer for carrying an illegal firearm. Last year, Carter was shot in the leg during a gang-related fight at Crosland Park.

The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) has obtained warrants in the Officer Involved Shooting that occurred on Tuesday, December 20, 2011, in Aiken, SC.

Stephon Morrell Carter, 19, of Sundy Avenue in Aiken will be charged with Murder and Attempted Murder. These warrants have been entered into NCIC, as the suspect is still in the hospital in Augusta, GA.

Carter will be arrested by the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office upon his release from the hospital and will be booked at the Richmond County Detention Center awaiting Extradition to South Carolina.

The investigation is continuing and the case will be prosecuted by the Second Circuit Solicitors’ Office.

Two officers and a suspect injured in a shooting in the city of Aiken, and now there is news that one officer is dead

33-year-old Master Public Safety Officer Scotty Richardson has died due to the wounds he received when shot during a traffic stop last night.

Richardson was married and had three young children and he began his career with Aiken Public Safety Sept. 27th 1999 as a Cadet and worked his way to a river Operator position and then became a Public Safety Officer on February14th 2005.

The other officer, 28-year-old Travis Griffinwasshot in the chest and his bulletproof vest saved his life. Griffin was treated and released late Tuesday evening and is with his family.

We don't know the extent of the suspect's injuries at this time.

We've also learned that SLED has been called in to investigate.
